Frequently Asked Questions
What is the time commitment for this project?
Tutoring takes place during regular school hours for a minimum of one hour per week. For the benefit of the students, TOV requests that all volunteers commit to tutoring for the full school year.
Can I participate if I have never tutored before?
Yes, absolutely! No experience is necessary—just a desire to help students learn to read! We will help you with the rest through training and the advice of experienced teachers.
Do I have to participate in orientation to participate in the program?
Yes. During orientation we review some of the specifics of our tutoring program and our expectations of the tutors. Orientation will also include tips and advice on tutoring and working with children.
Do I have to provide my own transportation to and from the school?
You must provide your own transportation to and from the school. However, TOV works with schools in a variety of different areas and neighborhoods and tries to accommodate volunteer preferences in order to cut down on travel time.
Where do I call if I won’t be able to tutor one week?
We know that as a tutor you will try your best to visit with your student each week. That consistency is very important. However, we also know that sometimes you just can’t get there. Ideally, if you know in advance, you should let your student’s teacher know. If that is not possible, please call your school.

Literacy is the foundation of a child's education. Read with a child for just one hour a week and open his or her eyes to a whole new world. No experience is necessary, just a desire to help a student learn to read!
