Ten University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign students, three Northwestern students, and one Depaul Student just returned from an alternative spring break spent helping to rebuild the Gulfport, Mississippi area that was heavily devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Along with 150 other Hillel students from universities around the country, students were part of a 3-week relief effort organized by Hillel International’s Tzedek Program. Students spent the week working on homes in need of new roofs and various other work including one home that was built and completed from foundation in one week! Thanks to these students, seventeen families are now able to begin moving back into their homes and rebuilding their lives. Hillel worked with Presbyterian Disaster Assistance to begin fulfilling the needs of this community in need. PDA provided Hillel with a “tent city" to live for a week where students and staff created a community based on providing social justice to those in need. Following an 8-hour work day, students participated in Jewish learning that dealt with tzedek and other relevant texts. Students also heard from FEMA representatives and local community volunteers.

Sometimes smart people let their personal prejudices mar their better judgment.

In making this decision, DePaul in our view has properly differentiated between the right to freedom of speech and the granting of tenure – a permanent appointment to the faculty that cuts to the core of a university’s values. By refusing tenure to an individual who has drastically and repeatedly distorted the facts in his treatment of the Holocaust, anti-Semitism and Israel, while vilifying people with whom he disagrees on such matters, DePaul has adhered to academic standards and to those values on which it was founded and has long upheld.
